Germany Close Up – American Jews Meet Modern Germany provides Jewish American students and young professionals in their twenties and early thirties with an opportunity to experience modern Germany up close and personally. Program participants visit sites of historical events, partake in aspects of contemporary Jewish life in Germany, meet with Germans of all backgrounds while encountering Germany’s different facets in Berlin and other venues. We work together closely with the German Embasssy in Washington D.C. and its General Consulates, the Humboldt University in Berlin and other American and German institutes. The program was inaugurated in New York in January 2008 by the General Consul in New York and in Berlin in April 2008 by the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. The purpose of the program is to allow participants to gain their own perspective on Germany through individual experience. Academic lectures and distinguished guest speakers will engage participants in discussion about the Shoah and Germany’s Nazi terror, in issues of memory and Germany’s continuing effort to come to terms with this terrible past, as well as Germany’s transformation in the last 50 years into a modern, reunified, and democratic country in the heart of the European Union which is home to the third-fastest growing Jewish community worldwide. Germany Close Up is administered by Foundation New Synagogue Berlin - Centrum Judaicum (www.cjudaicum.de). It is supported and subsidized by the Transatlantic Program, as part of the German Federal Government’s European Recovery Program. For upcoming events, please visit http://www.germanycloseup.de
2010 Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum Conference to be held at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, September 24-25, 2010. CLAC conferences provide a forum for faculty, graduate instructors, and administrators to gain and share expertise in building and managing post-secondary CLAC programs. This year's conference theme focuses on the practical issues related to developing successful pedagogical models for the CLAC classroom. We also encourage proposals dealing with the use of technology to support CLAC. A few words about CLAC: The CLAC movement intends to make global competence a reality for students and to create alliances among educators to share practices and methods for incorporating an international dimension in curricula, and, more generally, to achieve internationalization goals. General principles of CLAC include: • A focus on communication and content; • An emphasis on developing meaningful content-focused language use outside traditional language classes; • An approach to language use and cross-cultural skills as a means for the achievement of global intellectual synthesis, in which students learn to combine and interpret knowledge produced in other languages and in other cultures. Within this large framework, CLAC can take many forms, depending on specific content and curricular goals within a discipline. For more information, visit the CLAC website: http://clacconsortium.org/ CLAC 2010 conference website: http://clac2010.wordpress.com/ Program: http://clac2010.wordpress.com/program/ Registration: http://clac2010.wordpress.com/registration/ Conference Theme: CLAC in Practice: Evolving Pedagogies for Teaching Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum A specific focus of the 5th annual conference on Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum will be on supporting CLAC programs through effective pedagogical practices and useful applications of technology. We aim to engage seasoned CLAC practitioners, those in the process of implementing programs, and prospective CLAC program developers in a dialogue to share ideas and best practices in our evolving and unique field of education for global citizens. CLAC attendees generally come to the conference eager to learn more about how CLAC programs are implemented at other institutions. CLAC 2010 will provide an opportunity for more extended discussions of the practical matter of how to design and deliver the CLAC curriculum.
The Teach Europe program offers yearly workshop seminars intending to provide participants with fair and updated information about the European Union, its multicultural nature, its economy, role and impact on today's world, and its relations with the United States. It is a unique chance for specialists of the European Union and educators to meet and exchange knowledge and experience. This program also features a general Web site for the teachers and their students, and a pedagogical resources kit, for direct classroom use, will be given to all participants. The Teach Europe seminars are designed for high school teachers of EU languages, Social Studies, and History. No previous training in European studies is necessary. Each set of four workshops will be preceded by a keynote speech setting the main themes for the day and will be followed by a convivial European lunch and a panel discussion to open up the debate. At every seminar day, participants will work with professors and will be exposed to innovative teaching strategies. The Teach Europe Seminars are planned in accordance with nationwide Continuing Education Units standards. Upon completion of the program, CEUs or Credit Hours will be granted to the participants.
