Fall Professional Workshop

fall prof day

On December 10, 2008 a group of 18 Teachers of German got together at The Country House in Pemberton for the SJAATG Fall Professional Day. The even started with a relaxing Kaffeeklatsch for teachers to socialize with one another and catch up on events and current affairs within the organization. Following the business meeting, Willie Aust took the floor and presented insight on how to teach German through word origins. Focus was placed on not simply teaching vocabulary, but to teach students to derive meaning though word roots, hence leading to a much better understanding of language in general. Following a wonderful lunch provided by The Country House, Willie Aust gave a brief overview of the impact of Musik im Unterricht. “Presenting the target language through melodic music expands the learning modality options you are providing for your students” said Willie. All participated actively in singing along with famous German lyrics and Christmas Carols.

Teachers of German share to grow…

Deutschlehrertreffen.

On Wednesday evening December 10, 2008 several SJAATG members gathered at Melissa Slauson’s home in Haddonfield, NJ to chat, share ideas and discuss issues. Everyone enjoyed refreshments and conversation and agreed that there should be more chances to get together casually. Since most teachers have few chances to talk in depth with other teachers of German on a regular basis, the need to gather and talk becomes more significant. Hearing the experiences of other teachers and knowing that there was a trusted space to share concerns created a significant space for professional growth. The teachers felt that they wanted more opportunities to meet and talk. (Christopher Gwin, Haddonfield HS)

I really enjoyed having the opportunity to get together in an informal setting with my colleagues. Most of us do not ever get the chance to collaborate with other German teachers, as many districts only have one German teacher! It was really beneficial to meet with the others, share ideas, and express concerns that are unique to teaching German and running a German program. I am already looking forward to our next gathering! (Angela Bacher, Washington Township HS)
