SJAATG Website wants to feature YOU!Does your High School have an Exchange Program with Germany… if so we would like to feature you on our SJAATG website. Please provide an overview on how long the program has been in existence, who organizes it, which school the exchange is held with, time of year, etc. It would be a great piece to have all South Jersey schools with active exchange programs listed on our page. Feel free to include a picture… if you would like. Please send this information to: German Exchange Program
Highstown High School Exchange Coordinator: Highstown High School has an ongoing exchange with the Humboldtschule Gymnasium in Hannover that began in 1977. Students alternate years for visiting-we are traveling to Germany this spring. I have been coordinating this program since 1995.Many of my former students are still in contact with their "hosts" and in fact have traveled with them while on their "junior year abroad" as well as attending weddings both in NJ and Germany. In 2007 I met a parent at the welcome "brunch" ( has changed from a Kaffeeklatsch) who traveled to HHS in 1979 which means it is now affecting the second generation.
Collingswood High School, New Jersey Exchange Coordinator:
Collingswood HS German Program with John Oehlers (my 3rd time leading this, but this partnership was established by my predecessor, Maria Stewart, around 1991, I believe. Before that, she was exchanging with Grafenau.)
Our exchange occurs every two years. We have had this exchange since 2002. Exchange Students from Soest visit us in spring, usually around spring break and then German Students from Haddonfield High School visit them in summer, usually right at the end of the school year. We have a strong exchange program and this certainly is a strong reason students choose this language. Council Rock High School North, Pennsylvania Exchange Coordinator:
This German Exchange Program has been going on continuously since 1984! Our partners come here in March/April, staying with host families and students in the district. The group is chaperoned by two teachers from our partner school. During the visit the Ulm partners attend classes at the high schools as well as visit Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. The return visit to our partner school in Ulm is in June/July. The stay with our partners in Ulm will allow us to attend the Albert Einstein Gymnasium Ulm-Wiblingen and make several day trips to neighboring sights such as Munich, Lake Constance, Heidelberg, etc. A longer trip to Berlin is scheduled as well. We hope our long-standing record of success will continue, as many of our students have majored in German in college and used it in their careers! And of course many German and American families have remained close over the years and have visited each other on both sides of the pond! Vineland High School, New Jersey Exchange Coordinator:
This exchange program began in 2005 with the initial planning. The first exchange took place in April 2006. Our partners from Burscheid come every year in October for two weeks and are placed with students and host families actively involved in the German Program. The group is accompanied by two teachers from our partner school. The program includes local events, as well as excursions to New York City and Washington D.C. A reciprocal visit to Burscheid takes place every March/April. The students attend Burscheid Evangelische Realschule, are placed with host families within the city of Burscheid and take several trips, including Bonn and Cologne. The exchange student groups are usually between 12-20 students, placed in individual families for a full immersion. The experiences have led many students to continue their study of German in college and influenced their career choices. Many of our guest and host families plan visitations afterwards and remain close over the years. |
